The Polish band "Universe" and opera singers
Kinga Mitrowska and Lisa Di Maria also performed.
Most of the performers were youths or young adults from across southern
Ontario. They ranged from exceptional five-year-old
singer Michelle Garcea ("I Will Walk With God" and "Ave
Maria") to accomplished jazz musician Ola Turkiewicz ("An
Angel Upon
Them" and "Every Hour and Second"). All the pieces had
spiritual themes, and some we-re composed by the performers themselves.
The performances were interspersed with large-screen footage of the
recent papal-tribute Gala Concert at the Air Canada Centre, which was
put together by the same organizers. There was also footage and excerpts
of the Holy Father on some of his many pilgrimages at the World Youth
Days, in his native Poland, addres-sing
dignitaries and young people. He was sharing his insight about how to
live the Gospel message.
All the laureates received a beau-tiful "Pope of Peace" statuette.
It is a replica of a large monument that was completed a short time
prior to the 2002 World Youth Day in To-ronto. It was unveiled in Brampton
by Poland's Primate, Jozef Cardi-nal Glemp.
